"How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path."
Psalm 119:103 -105

Creating God in Your Image

Over the last few weeks I have been blessed by being able to participate in the Way of the Master class at our home church. It is an excellent program designed to teach you how to witness more effectively to people, strangers, co-workers, friends and family. It approaches witnessing utilizing the 10 commandments as a mirror to show the need for a Saviour. In one session they focused on not creating any images of God and that we often make God into the image that we want Him to be, something that in our sin, we are more comfortable with. During the video session, they went out in a crowd and interviewed people asking them what God was like. All of the people interviewed started out with, "Well, I think God is . . . . . . . . " When asked if they thought that when they stand before God would they be deserving of Heaven or Hell, some responded that they deserved Hell but that they thought God, being merciful, would let them into Heaven anyway. They changed God to fit their need instead of changing to meet His requirements.

If someone asked me, "What is Bobby really like." I would probably answer, "He's quiet, determined, focused, he loves God, ministering, lifting, teaching others to live a healthier lifestyle through diet and lifting and he always eats right." I could say something goofy like, "He eats chips, parties, never goes to church, spends all day in front of the tube and never works out." I could say that but it wouldn't change the way he really is. Bobby is who he is and that's it. I know him pretty well. I spend time with him, talk with him, I know what he does and can pretty much predict what he might do in any given situation because of the time I've spent with him.

God is the same way. He is the way He is. He doesn't change. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Sometimes, especially before we come to salvation or at the beginning of our walk, we try and make Him into something that we want Him to be but the truth is, no matter what we say, it doesn't change who He is. And, the only way we know who He is, is getting to know Him. It should be just like the relationships we have, talking, getting to know and spending time. Spend time in prayer, take time to worship in privacy, read your bible and know how God reacts and acts. God made you in His image, don't try and make Him into yours.
