Back to The Edge

Here is a nice little tidbit of info on Sodium and how it affects your look on stage.

Sodium retains water in and under your skin, also intramuscularly as well. For instance ONE CAN of Tuna fish packed in water has about 250 milligrams mgs. of sodium or salt (same thing) per serving. If you look at the can it contains about 2-1/2 servings per can. That's equal to 625 milligrams of Sodium per can. 1000 milligrams of Sodium equals one full GRAM of salt. One gram of salt is equal to eating one full teaspoon of pure salt or Sodium. So basically you almost have a full teaspoon of salt in that little can of Tuna fish!

So you can see how that can ruin your physique in the last week to two weeks before a show. One can of Tuna fish can smooth you out with water retention for about a week! It takes that long for you to sweat the water retention back out again. And for some that ate a can a tuna a few days before the show - it's too late!

Also egg whites contain allot of Sodium even though they don't taste like it. An average large egg white contains about 65 milligrams of sodium (per egg white).

I usually ate 2 dozen egg whites for breakfast - plus much other stuff and also many more egg whites throughout the day. So just do the math. 65 milligrams per egg white times 24 eggs equals 1,560 milligrams of Sodium - that's about a teaspoon and a half of pure salt.

I hope this tip will help many out while preparing for a show. You cannot mess up the last week to 2 weeks with Sodium or you will come in water logged and smooth and you won't look near your best that you could have.

ONLY eat (de-skinned) boiled Chicken breasts for your protein source the last week to two weeks before a show. Boiling gets all the fat to come and float on the surface of the water. Then all you have to do is pour off the water, change the water with fresh stuff and boil it again. This gets ALL the fat out of the meat and since sodium is very soluble in water - the salt goes into the water and you simply pour it out. What you have left is pure protein with zero sodium in it and no fat.
