Many are after the secret of less bodyfat & their scales reading less than they are currently. So what’s the secret? OK, here it is…You have to burn more calories than you consume! Sounds simple doesn’t it? Oversimplification, right? Yes, to some degree it is. You can’t eat purely junk food & sodas counting each calorie and expect to feel good and look good while losing weight. There are some common sense principles at work here. You must have the correct quality to your calories based on what your workload is. Also, if you don’t work out, you may lose pounds on the scale but will never tone up & remain flabby. So what’s right for you? I liken it to the bible verse that tells us to work out our own salvation with fear & trembling. You must work out your own diet the same way! So what do you need to know to do this? This isn’t meant to be an all-inclusive list but here are a couple of things to consider. 1). Elimination Diets: Elimination diets help you modify your calorie intake by balancing or eliminating a macronutrient meaning protein, carbohydrate and/or fat. For instance, the Atkins diet eliminates many carbohydrates & there are many low fat diets. While elimination diets tend to be successful, they are also stopgap methods as most people gain their weight back plus more because the diet isn’t maintained after the desired weight/fat goal is met. Carbohydrate elimination is generally not only tough to perform but also expensive. Walk up & down the aisles at your grocery store & price foods low in carbohydrates…it adds up! Try a Diet that lowers calories while more balanced or even variations of what you normally eat (provided it’s not junk food), just smaller portions. Experiment to see what works for you but don’t think of just the goal, think of your overall lifestyle and commit to make it healthier! 2). Increasing your calorie expenditure: While I could spout cliché’s and say a body in motion stays in motion; let’s just look at this with common sense. Your body isn’t efficient if you are lethargic and you only lessen your calories. Let’s see, I have a slow, sluggish metabolism and I’m going to eat less food giving me even less energy? Your body wasn’t designed to stay at rest. I still believe that’s why America is obese & there are so much self-inflicted health problems. The other thing to consider is that muscle burns more energy than fat. So when you sleep at night, not doing anything, your body is more efficient in calorie expenditure at rest! So you need to increase your activity. Pick things that get you up on your feet making you carry your own bodyweight; these are the most efficient exercises. There are many things to be said about all the diets that are out there right now. Try to regulate your blood sugar by not eating a lot of simple sugar, candy, or starches like white bread and white rice. Highly processed foods tend to have the nutrients processed right out of them. Diet plans are good but if it isn’t tailored around your eating habits, chances are you’re not going to stay with it. If you work slowly at changing your eating habits; you will be more likely to change them for the better. It’s not an overnight process to add activity and change your eating habits but it’s one that will benefit & add to your quality of life!
