We are a microwave generation! Get rich quick; drive through everything; start your dream job tomorrow; get your glasses in about an hour; hop on the highway and drive 70-80 mph; push, pull or drag your heap in and drive off in something new! Have you heard one of these? Do you feel the lure of immediate gratification? And you want your dream physique by the end of the week, too, right? I know it sounds like I’m being cynical of immediate gratification but I have the right. Why? Because I have been one of the most impatient people you’d ever meet (especially about fitness) and how I was forced to change. Today, I’d like to share some thoughts about reality & my changes by exploring the wisdom in a couple of cliches. 1). “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” If you’re goal is to go from being unhealthy to healthy, you have to understand it's a lifestyle. Many people want to join a gym and want to see improvement by the end of their first week. Beginning a healthy lifestyle will not be something you do perfectly from day one. It’s not only working out, it’s also what you eat & drink as well as how much rest you get. The things you’re doing now that contribute to your present physique have been created by habit & lifestyle. It will take time to relearn correct habits and then do them long enough to have a positive affect on your body. Be honest with yourself on your weak spots, especially what you do outside the gym & work on building better habits that will take you to your goals. 2). “You reap what you sow.” One of the general themes in the Bible is that you reap what you sow. If we are negative, we tend to look at things pessimistically, surround ourselves with negative people and are skeptical of anyone who has greater success than we do. Yet when we sow negatively, we shouldn’t be surprised that we will reap negatively. How can we reap anything else? We don’t believe success is a reality in the first place? But when we sow positive seeds in our lives and those around us, the only thing standing between us and positive achievement is time. One last thought; if you see someone you would like to emulate or model your physical physique on, don’t pick someone who hasn’t sacrificed for that goal. Find someone who didn’t give up when they didn’t have “Immediate Gratification” but stuck out their goals & sowed positive seeds, waiting patiently but persistently for their harvest. These are realistic people who have real advice to give you on achieving your physical goals!
