Overcoming Complacency All of us have fitness goals; that’s what led us to workout. However, some talk a good game & some actually achieve their goals. What’s the difference? One has overcome their complacency (the status quo) to move on to a new level. So how do you overcome your complacency? You may not like this…you’ll overcome it when you absolutely can’t stand the place you’re at now! Now before you click off this webpage, let me explain. We don’t change our circumstances when we don’t have to. When we do, whether by our choice or by circumstances, then we move closer to our goals. What I want to address today is taking control of your goals by your own choice. Here are some ways to break through or out of complacency towards your physical goals. 1). Change your surroundings/environment. If you’re depending on saying next week I’ll start working out & dieting consistently and you’ve never done this before, chances are you won’t make any appreciable gains by suddenly having new goals within the same old environment. Get out of your comfort area or even your rut to workout. Join a gym or attend aerobics classes, get out of the house and go biking! Make changes to your environment to achieve new success; remember its lunacy to do the same things over & over expecting different results than before. 2). Make time for success! OK, I hear you saying, I have kids & don’t have a place for them when working out after work. Who said you have to workout after work? Time management will help you find time for exercise. Some workout before work or during lunch. Some workout facilities offer classes suited just to the lunch crowd. Some people walk around the building rather than smoke during breaks. Use your time wisely. Incorporate your family to exercise with you. One friend I know has a son who plays soccer & she sometimes takes a ball on her walks and they’ll practice passing to each other! Where there’s a will there’s a way. 3). Set aside the negative. As one of my best friends likes to say, “You ain’t keeping it real!” So let’s talk cold, hard reality; you have a choice! You can keep make excuses for not reaching your goals or you can say I won’t live like this anymore, I WILL find some way to achieve my goals! For the first 12 years of my physique training, I told myself, I’m just thick waisted & I’ll always have love handles (fat around the waist). But as I studied information on dieting & supplementation I realized that this was just an excuse & my waist would shrink once I wanted it bad enough. I had to want to stay disciplined to a low calorie diet over enough time consistently to whittle down the years of fat I had accumulated. But it didn’t change until I would no longer accept the status quo towards my bodyfat level. There’ll be steps you’ll take after you choose not to settle for your fitness levels anymore. You’ll need to research or find a role model/mentor to help you with the knowledge you’ll need to move forward. You’ll save yourself a lot of time & frustration with qualified help but you’ll have to put down your excuses, pride, know-it-all attitude, & comfort zone to sincerely begin moving towards success. So how about it? Do you REALLY want to obtain your fitness/physique goals? And just what are you doing to achieve them?
