1) What's your favorite Scripture?

As I participate in the spiritual quest put before all Christian disciples I find different Scriptural utterances feed my soul at different times. One that comes to my mind most often is from the Sermon on the Mount that being Matthew Chapter 5 Verse 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

2)Who were your childhood heroes?

Like many kids I gravitated to men of adventure and action. TV stars like Jim West of “The Wild, Wild West” series, and Steve Reeves of “Hercules” movie fame. I was literally riveted to the TV screen the night I first saw Steve in that movie. And I can’t forget the majestic portrayal of Moses by Charlton Heston.

3)If you could meet anyone from the Bible, who would it be and why? You can't say Jesus, we all want to and we prayerfully will one day!

I would want to meet Paul, a convert who championed unflinchingly the gift of Christ our Savior to the people of his day. How did a man who at first was so bent on persecuting Christians, come to Christ and gain so many for Him? Was it by virtue of his tremendous, miraculous conversion experience? I wonder how I would have reacted meeting our resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus and being asked “Why I are you persecuting me?” It gives me chills thinking about it.

4)What is a typical day in your life like?

As an art teacher at a community college I’m usually concerned with getting ready for work and eating a good breakfast to fuel my morning needs. I look to God for guidance and reflect how I can demonstrate my Christian values in my interactions with my students and fellow employees. I’m mindful of the value of each human life put before me throughout the day as I do not believe in pure chance. I check my emails and act upon all that need action immediately and leave others for later. I usually workout three or four days a week so on a workout day I am really aware of how and what I eat. Social interactions flow throughout the day and that time is most precious to me. Time is a gift from God for His purpose.

5)What Biblical figure do you most identify with & why?

I think David is who I most identify with. He was judged as a youth as not being worthy to go out to face Goliath, but he persisted until they relented and let David face Goliath in battle. Also, that David sinned but God forgave him and loved him. David sang praises to God from his heart. When I sing in church I sing with passion and praise to our Lord and I feel a kinship to David in this regard also.

6)What trait do you like most about yourself?

I think the trait I most like is my confidence that I can and will make a difference in this life I have been given. It is what has kept me in teaching for 17 years so far. And it is why I am politically active.

7)What trait do you least like about yourself?

I dislike my headstrong attitude on some things. I will not compromise on some issues and will not hold my tongue when, at times, discretion would be the better part of valor. But that can also be a good thing, so I also see it as strength.

8)How have you been able to represent God in your sport?

By keeping myself a lifetime drug-free bodybuilder in order to be true to God’s plan for my body. I do not support distortions through steroids and other introduced methods to cosmetically alter the body. Muscles are evidence of work ethic and proper nutrition coupled with God’s designed metabolism. Physical culture is meant to maintain the Spirit in a properly maintained temple. Don’t desecrate your body, keep it true and clean for God provided you this temple to house His spirit in you. Take care and maintain it with respect.

It just so happens that on Good Friday our local paper did a story on the first MCBB Cyber Contest featuring me, and I was able to give witness to God’s incredible influence in the choices I have made in my hobby as a bodybuilder. I made choices that I and anyone else can truly live with. Right now I want to pause and thank Bobby and Val for making that testimony possible. Without your risk and vision to promote this contest I wouldn’t have had the opportunity. And the venue of this interview is a blessing also.

9)If you could change one thing in your sport, what would it be?

I think I covered that in answering the preceding question don’t you? I would champion a return to true physical culture and workable fitness. The focus on mind-blowing mass has invited scorn and sick fascination with just how far the body can be stretched to cartoon-like proportions. I guess you can compare it to a “funny-car” attitude applied to bodybuilding. How loud and audacious can you build a car, and how loud and audacious can you build and strip down the human body. Disregard your health for a momentary visual effect? I think not!

10)If you were to die today and go to heaven, what would you like to hear God say?

Come here to me and be comforted Jeff. You have done well for your brothers and sisters.
