KEEPING THE BLOOD

I have seen many men and women in my travels to gyms around the world super-setting two or maybe even three body parts together at the same time.

What I mean by this is that the person may do a set of Bench Presses for their chest, then they would do a set of triceps for the back of their arms and then a set of biceps for the front of the arms afterwards. Then they repeated the cycle. The configuration of body parts grouped together varied so much from gym to gym that I just couldn’t keep track of them all. This is OK if you only have limited time at the gym and want to work as many body parts as you could during a workout and as your time in the gym allowed.

But what you’re really trying to accomplish is keeping the blood in a particular muscle group for as long as you can. This allows the blood to deposit nutrients into the muscle fibers for a longer period of time and allows it to grow faster.

However it all comes down again to individualism. Psychologically if you think something is working it probably will. The mind is a powerful influence on the body and what it says usually goes - to a point. Physiologically speaking though it makes more sense to work and pump up one body part to its maximum - then go on to the next body part.

The only exception I can see to this rule is back stage when you’re trying to pump up your entire body before a show. However never pump your legs before a contest (calves are OK if they are a weak body part) – or your legs will smooth out any cuts you have in your thighs in a heartbeat. Pumping legs before a show also takes away from the necessary pump of all other muscle groups on top of your body.

Let me ask you this - Would it make sense to do a set of chest and then hit the squat rack right afterwards? - of course not. Your legs are huge verses your Chest and legs require a huge amount of blood and energy to train them. Your chest will deflate as soon as you hit the first set of squats and that’s not logical training.

Group your body parts together sensibly, unless you have the luxury of time like the pros do to hit a major body part first then they go home, eat, rest and then hit another body part later on in the day.

Most of us DON’T have that luxury time wise available. I don’t either anymore. But I still keep the blood in the body part as long as I can – that’s because I only train one body part per day? and real hard and long. But that’s what works for me.

But like I always say “Do what works for YOU” If you think something is working - it probably will - so stick with it! Remember the mind has control over your body.

Until next time - Train hard and GROW!
