But I'm Comfortable!
Christmas dinner is over, and I saunter over
to the sofa. Ahhh! I just settle down onto
the couch and get all comfy cozy as I prepare
to watch my favorite Christmas movies like
"It's a Wonderful Life" and "A
Christmas Carol" with Alistair Sim.
I hear the water go on in the kitchen sink
and I begin a war within myself: Do I stay
all comfortable or do I get up and help?
My inner child whines "but I'm comfortable!"
The adult feels guilty for being selfish
and I get up to help. Besides, it's much
more fun being comfortable, snuggling and
watching these movies with your loved ones
anyway! But that brings us to the topic of
htis month's newsletter - The Comfort Zone.
Too many times, bodybuilders fall into the
trap of being comfortable. They like a certain
routine that they are doing and stick with
it regardless of the lack of progress. Rather
than change up the routine every eight weeks,
five weeks or after even three sessions,
they will stick to the same old boring routine
for years! I am not kidding you! I actually
know someone who stayed on the same routine
for over two years straight because they
were afraid to change! They were in a comfort
zone with their training. Almost all of you
out there know that just doesn't promote
growth. However, we have all fallen into
this trap at one time or another. Maybe not
as drastic as two years without changing
your routine, but how about set and rep schemes?
When I first started training, I wouldn't
do any other set and rep scheme except 7-5-3!
Why? I didn't know any better and that is
what I was taught! I thought the teacher
knew better than me so I stuck with it. Many,
many years later, with grey hair now at my
temples I know that I was stuck in a comfort
zone. Someone gave me a set of boundries
and I was happy with them. But we don't move
forward when there are boundries. Our progress
is slowed and even halted. Had I not discovered
10-8-6s, 5x5s, 8x8s, etc. I never would have
made any gains. So I challenge you to break
out of your comfort zone. Like David Banner
ripping through his clothes and turning into
the Hulk, tear down your walls, break out
of those chains! Get uncomfortable!
“It is finished!” (from John 19:30) Jesus' final words because
his task had been completed. Sometimes God
moves with us in a direction for a time and
when the task is completed, instead of moving
on we keep on going back to the same thing
even though we know that we are being moved
on in a different direction. As humans, we
resist change. We become comfortable in our
daily routine and we don't want to move in
any other direction than the one we are going
in now. "It is finished, it's done,"
God says to us, "I have something new
for you." Those can be hard words to
hear and harder to obey. Why? Because we
have experienced our success and we aren't
really sure what is going to be around the
corner in that uncharted territory. We have
to say to ourselves, "I trust you Lord"
move ourselves onto the runway for the depature
and ready ourselves for the trip. We must drop the stick and leave that old dead horse
alone.
Just like that old workout routine that was
started weeks ago, now it is just not cutting
it. It's time to move onto something new,
something that is going to get new results.
It was good for that time, but that time
has moved on.
That is what God has been telling us here
at MCBB for some time. We are being moved
in the direction of ministering to those
not in our comfortable realm of iron brothers,
but those who know nothing of fitness, those
who are drowning in the pool of unhealthy
living. It's not really a pool, it's more
like an ocean, vast and full of people swimming
in one direction or another looking for a
place to land. Don't get me wrong, we are
not leaving you, our beloved cyberfriends
of weight training and fitness, no, on the
contrary, we are rallying you and calling
you to join us in our new direction. We are
wanting to go out into the churches and businesses
and give of what we have, our knowledge of
fitness and salvation, flowing from the Love
of God. Yes, it is change and it is an unsure
area but we have been given these talents,
this wisdom and we can use it for God's Glory
and purpose.
And now our prayer. Father We pray for your
guidance as we step out in a
new direction
to reach others. Be our strength
as we step
out from behind the computer
and out among
the people to spread the Good
News and to
share what we know about health
and fitness.
Give us the strength and courage
and boldness
to witness to others, to share
the joy that
we have come to know. In Jesus
name we pray.
Amen!
Now go with God and lift that
iron!
