| 1. What is your favorite scripture? My favorite Scripture is Psalm 22, which begins, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" This is the astounding prediction of the Passion of Christ, written by David more than two thousand years ago. When Jesus said these exact words from the Cross, many today think he was asking God why this was happening to Him. In fact, Jesus, always the Teacher, was giving the Jews standing around the Cross a Bible lesson, the first line of David’s Psalm. The Jews knew their Scripture and would have or should have known what was going on, because David told them. And, if they remembered this Scripture, they might have become "believers." 2. Who were your childhood heros? I was a World War II baby, born in 1943. From my earliest childhood, I always looked up to any one wearing a military uniform. I guess that’s why, as soon as I was old enough, I joined the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man. I later rose in the ranks from seaman recruit and retired after 30 years as a Navy Captain. 3. If you could meet anyone from the bible, other than Jesus, who would it be? I would like to have met and traveled with St. Luke. He was a physician and thinker. His is my favorite of the Four Gospels, because he wrote it for the gentiles. His explanation of events is still pertinent today. 4. What is a typical day in your life like? Monday – Friday I rise at 4:50 AM, start the coffee, don my gym gear, have a cup of coffee with my wife, kiss my wife, leave for the gym by 6:00. I work out from 6:30 – 7:45 and arrive at my office by 8:30. As Vice President, Communications for a multi-national religious multi-media organization, I am responsible for three departments, including the web site, media relations and advertising and publicity. I pray with the staff for a few minutes in the morning and before each meeting. I also visit our Chapel once or twice a day just to say "hello" to Our Lord. I leave the office by 5:30 and arrive home by 6:00. We usually have dinner by 6:30, and finally settle down for a few hours of TV or reading. One night a week I have Church choir practice (I sing bass). We are usually in bed by 10:00 PM. On Saturday, I go to the gym for a "fun hour" and on Sunday I go to Church for a "God hour." 5. What Biblical figure do you most identify with & why? I like St. Joseph, Jesus’ father on earth. He is a strong man with great courage. He took on the responsibility of raising the Son of God from infancy until Jesus began His ministry. There is not much said of St. Joseph in the Bible, but nevertheless, he is an awesome father figure. As the father of two college-aged daughters, I sometimes wonder if St. Joseph ever worried about his "Son" the way I do my daughters. 6. What trait do you like most about yourself? I like the fact I am a disciplined person. I believe if one is not disciplined, there is no way one could become a champion bodybuilder. There are too many nuances, pitfalls and obstacles in this sport. It’s very easy to miss something that could turn out to be disastrous during your "five minutes" on stage. 7. What trait do you least like about yourself? I don’t like the fact I am an impatient person. I have a hard time "cooling my heels" between contests. Right now, I am training for my first contest in 2006 next March. That’s 27 weeks away. See, I even know how many weeks. I want it to happen now. Of course I didn’t get started into competitive bodybuilding until I was 61 years old. Maybe I just want to "catch up" with the field a little. 8. How have you been able to represent God in your sport? I am a prayerful man. I usually end my conversations with fellow competitors with a happy, "God Bless." My personal trainer and I publicly pray together in the pump-up room prior to my stepping on stage. As a "natural" athlete, I show a calm, quiet, respectful demeanor when I’m backstage. I am friendly and helpful. I am a good sport and congratulate all participants I encounter. 9. If you could change one thing in your sport, what would it be? Do you have to ask? I would ban all illegal muscle enhancing drugs and set up a "level" playing field were anyone who has the drive, determination, grit, and dedication to successfully train and compete in a bodybuilding competition can do so with the expectation of having a reasonable chance of placing high. 10. If you were to die today and go to heaven, what would you like to hear God say? "Scott, my son, you made a lot of mistakes, you committed your share of sins, but you were always repentant. You loved my Son and tried to live a Christian life. You gave your family a safe, secure and loving Christian home. And you always made a "Joyful noise unto the Lord" when you sang to me on Sunday. Come on in." |
