Training: A Religious Experience

A few years ago, I began to implement a dynamic mental application in my training. This method has not only helped to enhance me physically, but also spiritually. It is a technique used for warrior training that is explosive and far-reaching.

Everytime you bench press, you are initiating a vector of energy that projects a force beyond the point at which the bar is held at maximum extension. Whenever you curl something up, you are literally curling it into yourself. Whatever that curl was made of, will enter you and become substance, and whatever you pushed away from you, will leave you, and replace itself with substance of greater measure.

Here's what I'm referring to: The body is divided into energy zones. These zones are established by function, nerves, brain centers, and hormones. As many of you know, the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, and the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. So when you're working out, most often symmetrically, you are bringing your brain under the control of disciplined orchestration similar to when a person plays a musical instrument. This helps to coordinate brain centers that are often working in counterpoint.

From the naval down to the feet is the "flight" zone. Even though these muscles also perform other functions, when your brain tells your adrenals that you need to flee, that's where the conduit of energy will rush, so you can take off. Above the naval is the fight zone. This is where energy will be directed if you need to kick the butt of a foe. However, both zones must be built up proportionately and always work together for maximum force.

Now the upper zone, is subdivided into three directions related to the three dimensions of (length, width, and height of x, y, & z), the space in which we move. x=pushing away from the body, y=lifting over the body, and z=pulling in toward the body.

Here's the mental technique... Whenever I perform and exercise like a bench press, that drives a force away from my body, I focus my mind on driving away negative things, such as: sin, unrighteousness, weakness, defeat, depression, doubt, or anything that threatens to weaken or overtake me. Everything that God calls us to forsake and drive into the abyss, is what I afix my mind to when I'm push an opposing force away from me. And what am I blessed with in return? A strengthened will and a beautiful breastplate of righteousness, visible both in my pectoral development, but also glowing from the resolved, single-minded heart within it.

And when I pull or curl a resistant force into myself, I express my passion to rescue God's lost children, to hold onto all hopes, to retrieve all that was taken from Him, and from me, and to work toward the fulfillment of my dreams by importing all of God's promises and building them into my very flesh, again, through the force of uncompromised will. Then what am I blessed with for so doing? A double portion of reward -- an enhanced bodily self and an unshakably positive attitude that brings its dreams to fruition.

Then when I lift something up over my head, as in a military press, lateral raise, or even a squat, (remember your vector travels farther along a straight line than the point at which the movement stops), I think of lifting up Christ, carrying His cross, standing for His testimony and glory, and raising His banner high. And what do I receive in return? Shoulders to carry my portion of the world and a truly uplifted spirit dwelling delightfully within.

Working the legs involved the three above directions, but also, the issue of fleeing those things that God has called us to run from, as well as to run toward Him and all that He represents.

I have at times, performed 6 reps on all push movements, 7 reps on all pull movements, and 8 reps on all lifting movements. The reason is that 6 represents the number of man's self will and also of satan; 7 represents God's perfection and completion; and 8 represent redemption and newness. It also poetically corresponds to the thought patterns mentioned above.

This is not a mystical formula being laid out, just a secret meeting with God, which transforms the average workout into a truly "religious" experience. It is a prayer, unspoken but clearly understood, and one that has an immediate payback and reply. And one more thing..., you'd be amazed to find just how far those worship vectors travel, as they are based on His truth. "My Word shall not return to Me void, but shall go forth and accomplish all that I sent it to do."
